More on food

More on food I think Im going to be fixating on food for a while, at least until I get used to this eating healthy food BS. So Im going to write about dining at the Institvte. (Ill admit that Im also writing this because I was in lab until 7 tonight yes, on a Friday night and that nice wrinkly organ that sits between my ears is not working so well, so I think Ill let my stomach take over.) First, TechCash. We dont have generic meal plans like most other schools do, but instead have a sort of debit card associated with our student ID. You (or your parents, more commonly) are free to put as much or as little money as desired on the card. This is pretty different from some other places, where students are required to buy x meals per week at the school dining halls. One of my friends at state school succintly describes her schools dining hall food as slop. Mmm. As far as residential dining halls go, there are four: McCormick, Baker, Next, and Simmons, all of which are open Sunday through Thursday for dinner; Pritchett Dining is open for dinner on east campus. Ive only ever been to Next and Simmons, and theyre okay. I mean, theres a pretty wide variety of food offered on any given day, so if you dont like something thats being served, you can eat something else. Both Next and Simmons offer made-to-order stirfry, so you can have it your way without even going to a fast food restaurant. The food in the residential halls isnt cheap, but neither is any kind of food in Boston (the price of food, of course, being one of the hardest things for this transplanted Midwesterner to become accustomed to). Lunch dining halls on campus include Lobdell food court (including a Burger King! Oops, Im on a diet. Including a salad bar!), Stata Dining (eclectic and expensive, but good), and Sub Connection (aka the Biology Building cafe. Because its in the bio building, I eat here more often than Id like to admit. The guy who works there doesnt even ask what I want anymore, he just starts making it when he sees me walk in). For noshing, several cafes take TechCash theres a Starbucks in the Stata Center, and two cafes on the Infinite Corridor, one in lobby 7 and one in building 4. We MIT kids lurve our coffee. A handful of actual restaurants (ie, not run by campus dining) also accept TechCash. Dominos Pizza accepts the card, delivers, and is pizza. (What more do college students want?) Im a big fan of Alpine Bagel in the Student Center they have breakfast food, bagel sandwiches, smoothies, hamburgers, and brick-oven pizza. Annas Taqueria is also in the student center, for those who like la comida mexicana. Lets not forget the humble food trucks. There are nine (?) on and around campus every day, bringing cheap and delicious food in an ice-cream-truck-like vehicle. Types of food offered include Asian, Mexican, Middle Eastern, and pizza(ian). The food trucks arent on the card, but they should be. I treat myself to the Asian food truck near the bio building every Tuesday because their curry chicken makes me happy. Further on the topic of good food not paid for by TechCash, Campusfood.com allows us to order food online and (in many cases) have it delivered to our doors. One can also buy groceries on TechCash at LaVerdes grocery store in the student center (which also sells sandwiches and such from their deli), and at Campus Convenience, the store on the first floor of Macgregor. Many of the dorms, including Macgregor, Random, Bexley, Burton-Conner, EC, Senior House, and Simmons, have kitchens for resident use. Personally, I cook for myself more often than not, because its cheaper and healthier also, I live in a dorm with no dining hall, and when the wind is whipping down dorm row in the winter, the last thing I want to do is leave to go to a dining hall. Hooray for food!

As educators are well aware, however, these critical tasks can become a source of chronic stress, especially during the freshman year. If left unchecked, such stress can uncover or lead to more serious psychological disorders, which can, in turn, cause social isolation, school failure, and self-destructive behaviors. The Nation’s Voice on Mental Illness (2005) affirms that: â€Å"Most illnesses develop between the ages of 17 to 25, but that’s not to say it can’t start sooner or later than that.†Ã‚   Speaking about American students, NYU Child Study Center (2004) shows also that: â€Å"- depression affects over 19 million American adults annually, including college students. At colleges nationwide, large percentages of students are feeling overwhelmed, sad, hopeless and so depressed that they are unable to function†¦   -eating disorders affect 5-10 million women and one million men nationwide, with the highest rates occurring among college-aged women.    -suicide was the eighth leading cause of death for all Americans, the third leading cause of death for those aged 15-24 years, and the second leading killer in the college population in 1998.    -nearly 50% of American teenagers of high-school age are currently, or have been, sexually active. Everyday, 8,000 teenagers in the United States become infected by a sexually transmitted disease (STD)†¦ † The transition to student life has always been unsettling but being a student is quite different now from 20 years ago. Today we have a mass higher education system, so universities tend to be much larger and less personal.   It’s very rare for students to go through a degree program with the same 20 or 30 people – instead they take different modules with large numbers of different people so it’s hard for them to build up support networks.   And one don’t just have finals now, one have exams twice a year, every year, so the pressure is on from the moment one start until the moment he finishes. The causes of depression are complex. Very often a combination of genetic, psychological and environmental factors is involved in the onset of clinical depression. Common stressors in college life include: greater academic demands, being on your own in a new environment, changes in family relations, financial responsibilities, changes in your social life, exposure to new people, ideas, and temptations, awareness of your sexual identity and orientation, preparing for life after graduation. At times, however, depression occurs for no apparent reason. Whatever the cause is, depression is almost always treatable. But the problem is not only to get rid of the stress but to learn how to manage with it or (what would be the best solution) how to prevent it. The problem is also not only in a great threat for student’s health which is issued by stress but in making a student unable to develop his skills. Hundreds of students, sometimes very gifted ones, suffer because of depression which is a great obstacle on the way of their development as personalities. It must be said that nowdays the net of guide counselors is developed quite well and practically all educational establishments of famous have among their personnel professional psychologists who make a great deal of work. But it also must be noted that in recent years the intensity of so-called â€Å"students’ stress† hasn’t decreased but quite the contrary, it has increased a lot. Symptoms include: sadness, anxiety, or â€Å"empty† feeling, decreased energy, fatigue, being â€Å"slowed down†, loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities, appetite and weight changes (either loss or gain) ,sleep disturbances (insomnia, oversleeping, waking much earlier than usual), feelings of hopelessness, guilt, and worthlessness, thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts difficulty concentrating, making decisions, remembering, irritability or excessive crying, chronic aches or pain not explained by other physical condition. A less intense type of depression- dysthymia, involves long-term, chronic symptoms that are less severe, but keep you from functioning at your full ability and from feeling well. In bipolar illness (also known as manic-depressive illness), cycles of depression alternate with cycles of elation and increased activity, known as mania. Bipolar disorder is a type of depressive illness that involves mood swings that go from periods of depression to periods of being overly â€Å"up† and irritable. Sometimes the mood swings are dramatic or rapid, but most often they occur gradually, over several weeks. The â€Å"up† or manic phase can include increased energy and activity, insomnia, grandiose notions and impulsive or reckless behavior, including sexual promiscuity. Medication usually is effective in controlling manic symptoms and preventing the recurrence of both manic and depressive episodes. When the depression lasts for two weeks and more or interferes with academic or social functioning it may be clinical depression. Clinical depression is a common, frequently unrecognized illness that can be effectively treated. Clinical depression can affect your body, mood, thoughts, and behavior. It can change your eating habits, how you feel and think, your ability to work and study, and how you interact with people. Clinical depression is not a passing mood, a sign of personal weakness, or a condition that can be willed away. Clinically depressed people cannot â€Å"pull themselves together† and get better. Depression can be successfully treated. With the right treatment, 80 percent of those who seek help get better. And many people begin to feel better in just a few weeks. The notion of stress or depression is connected tightly with alcohol and drugs and suicide intentions. A lot of depressed people, especially teenagers, also have problems with alcohol or other drugs. Sometimes depression comes first and people try drugs as a way to escape it. Other times, the alcohol or other drug use comes first, and depression is caused by the drug itself, or withdrawal from it, or the problems that substance use causes. And sometimes one can’t tell which came first. The important point is that when one has both of these problems, the sooner he gets treatment, the better. Thoughts of death or suicide are usually signs of severe depression. Talking to a professional in this case can get student past those intense feelings and save his life. Suicidal thoughts, impulses, or behaviors always should be taken seriously.   It is necessary to contact someone he or she trusts: a good friend, academic or resident advisor. Answer: Issue: The issue in this case is if Peter and Aidan can be held to be bound by the contract when Adrian entered into a contract for purchasing accounting standards worth $25,000. Therefore, for instance, there can be a situation where an outsider may claim that all the partners should be considered as being bound by the contract when the contract was created by one partner but it is not able to perform (Freeman locker v Buckhurst Park Property (Mangal) Ltd, 1964). In such a case, the law requires that the outsider should be able to establish that the partner who has created the contract, enjoyed the authority to create a binding contract on behalf of the partnership firm. In this way, in such a case, even if the partner acted outside the authority provided to it, the contract can be ratified by the other partners. Hence, the partnership can adopt such a contract (Kelner v Baxter, 1866). In order to deal with such a situation, section 5, Partnership Act provides that under the law, all the partners are treated as the agents of others and also of the partnership. Hence, the acts of the partners that were taken while furthering the business of the partnership, that is generally performed by the firm, is treated as being binding on the partnership firm unless the partner who has entered into the contract, does not have the required authority and moreover, the third party also knew regarding the lack of authority. A leading case in this regard is that of Re Agriculturist Cattle Insurance Co (1870). Application: For this purpose, the partners may have actual authority or apparent authority. For example, in Construction Engineering (Aust) Pty Ltd v Hexyl Pty Ltd (1985), the court pointed out towards two parts of section 5. According to the first portion, it deals with the actual authority of the partners. On the other hand, the second one is concerned with the partners apparent authority. In this way, section 5 provides that an outsider has to establish that the contracting partner enjoyed actual or apparent authority in case the partner wants that the contract should be enforceable against the partnership. On the basis of the facts that have been given in this question, it is clear that two contracts have been created by Adrian, one with Tom and the other with Edgar. However the question arises in these two contracts can be enforced against the partnership. For this purpose it needs to be seen regarding the contract with Tom, that although the transaction was beyond the scope of authority that was provided to the partners but it can be said that Adrian had apparent authority. The transaction was concluded by Tom while furthering the business of the firm that was usually carried on by it. Moreover, Tom did not know regarding the limit placed on the authority of the partners. The accounting journals that were purchased by Adrian were related with the nature of usual business of the firm. A transaction will be considered to be binding in such a case if the outsider was not aware regarding the lack of authority (Polkinghorne v Holland Whitington, 1934). As mentioned above, Tom did not kne w that Adrian cannot enter contracts worth more than $10,000 without getting an approval from other partners. In such cases, according to the partnership law, the limitation that has been placed on the authority of the partners do not effect the rights of the outsiders, when such an outsider is not aware of these limitations (Mercantile Credit Ltd v Garrod, 1962). However regarding the transition with Edgar, it was clear that surveying was not the business that was usually carried on by the firm. Therefore in this case the contract between Adrian and Edgar cannot be enforced against the partnership firm even if the value of the contract was $8000. Conclusion: regarding the contract between Tom and Adrian, it can be said that the partnership firm is bound by this contract. On the other hand, the partnership firm and its partners are not bound by the contract created by Adrian with Edgar for purchasing surveying equipment. Issue: in this question, the issue is if the corporate veil can be pierced by the court and it can be decided that Richard had formed Fat Away Pty Ltd only for the purpose of avoiding the clause that was present in his contract with Nu-Slim Pty Ltd. According to this contract, Richard had been prohibited from selling slimming products in competition with Nu Slim for a period of three years after he has left the company. Another issue that also needs to be decided is related with the personal liability of Richard for the loan of $40,000 that has been taken by the company. This objective is achieved by the courts by using the concept of piercing the corporate veil. In this way, when the corporate veil is lifted by the courts, the court deci des that the obligations of the company can be enforced against its members. Generally it is provided by the law that a company has its own separate legal identity. The result is that the debts and obligations of the company can be enforced against the company only. In most of the cases, the separate identity of a company is recognized by the courts but under certain rare circumstances, the court may arrive at the conclusion that the corporate veil should be lifted (Sealy, 2001). Therefore when a contract has been signed by a person which provides that the person will not be involved in a competing business with the company for the time mentioned in the contract, after the person leaves the company and such person forms a company which is involved in competing business with the former company, it can be held by the court that the purpose behind the formation of the new company was only to avoid the liability of such a person for the breach of contract with the former company. Therefore in such a case, the court may arrive at the conclusion that the new company is merely a facade or sham. Under such circumstances, the court may allow that the previous company can sue the person for this breach. Hence, in this case the court will not consider the separate identity of the corporation and look at the reality. As mentioned above, one of the purposes behind the formation of a company is to provide protection to the personal assets of its shareholders if the company fails. As compared to the business structure of a sole trader or a partnership, where the owners are personally liable, the shareholders of the company are liable only to the extent of their investment. However, with the passage of time, the scope of protection that has been provided to the members of the company has been narrowed down by the courts. Therefore increasingly, the courts are holding that the members can be held personally liable in several situations. In order to achieve this objective, the courts left the corporate veil, particularly when small and privately held companies are involved or where the company has few shareholders and limited assets. The result is that if the company is considered as a separate entity, distinct from its members, in equitable results may be produced or such a situation may promote fraud . An example regarding reading the corporate veil by the court can be given in the case of Lee v Lee Air Farming (1960). In this case, the court stated that an owner of the company can also be an employee of the company. The reason given in support of this decision was that the company is considered as a separate legal entity. Application: Regarding the issue of the liability of Richard for the breach of non-competing covenant that was present in his contract with Nu-Slim, the case of Gilford Motor Co Ltd v Horne (1933) needs to be applied. The brief facts of this case are that the court considered the company and its shareholders as a single entity. The court was of the opinion that Mr Horne was using the new company as an instrument of fraud. In the present case also, the corporate way can be lifted by the court and Richard can be held liable for the breach of covenant. On the basis of this spreading awareness of women's abuse in home settings, feminist activists sought social and political change, urging the state to intervene in order to provide support and relief for the abused women. Since then a lot of progress has been made that militated against domestic violence. As can be surmised from the case study cited above, there is presently a very impressive degree of support available for victims of domestic abuse in the UK. On a more basic level, however, the prevalence of domestic violence even within the Western countries can be seen to be raging unabated. Response Paper On Being An Atheist Philosophy Essay In the H.J. McCloskey article entitled, On Being an Atheist he begins with assertions that are absent of logic, common sense, and reasoning. He reaches all these conclusions without even a respectful cursory reading of Gods word, much less study. I will attempt to show where his arguments do not, conclusively prove that atheism is true, or that God does not exist.  [1]  I find it interesting that he does not address ontological arguments (the idea of God proves, or adds evidence to, the fact that He exists and, in fact, dismisses them. Therefore, I want to point out that ontological arguments do not prove atheism, because simply declaring yourself an atheist does not qualify you as an atheist. With all due respect, Mr. McCloskey argues in favor of atheism and attempts to discredit theism, by using multiple approaches one being that God failed to establish His own existence, and he claims in his cosmological argument, that the existence of all that we experience and see while on e arth, does not prove God exists or that He is even necessary.  [2]   Proofs cant definitively establish the case for God First, McCloskey implies proofs cant definitively establish the case for God, so they should be abandoned. McCloskey makes no effort to define evil, nor does he attempt to explain it. He tries to discredit anyones belief in God, by attacking the origin of their belief, but he never addresses why a persons faith cannot be valid whether they examine all the evidence prior to accepting Christian theism are not! To understand McCloskeys argument, you have to understand relativism, which is a position where all points of view are equally valid and all truth is relative to the individual, but relativism does not prove there is no God. Philosophy sometimes clouds issues to the point, that nothing can be known for sure. For the Christian, the ultimate expression of truth is found in Jesus words in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life McCloskey portrays God as jaded, accusatory, argumentative, uncaring, incompetent, unforgiving, and punitive. Mr. McCloskey is putting forth a cause and effect argument absent of consequences. McCloskey says the best proofs of the non existence of God are the evil acts of men and women and he circumvents morality, and focuses on evil, because morality is stronger proof that an intelligent creator designed the universe. As a result, McCloskey struggles with the question: AWhy is there evil and suffering in the world?  [3]   The Cosmological Argument In his book: Reasonable Faith, William Lane Craig, writes, There must exist a creator, or a being responsible for all creation and that creator has no need of a cause, as do those things which have an origin. So everything that begins to exist does need a cause, but to say that something has no beginning does not need a cause, denies the existence of a predecessor.  [4]   In Dr. Evans book, Philosophy of Religion, he summarized the cause question saying, The person who believes in God and the person who does not believe in God, do not merely disagree about God. They disagree about the very character of the universe. If God does not exist, objective moral values do not exist and since they do, then God does exist. Cultural relativism makes the culture the supreme determinant of right and wrong; therefore, the culture becomes god. McCloskey flippantly and wrongly asserts, There is no God, because of all the evil and wickedness in the world.  [5]  Mr. McCloskey argues against theism and paints a picture of humanity being little more than animals and acts that we classify as murder, torture, and rape are natural and amoral just as in the animal kingdom. Moreover, if there is no rule of law to prohibit certain actions, how can we have moral obligations or prohibitions? The cosmological argument asks: Is something good because God wills it, or does God will something because its good? Theists have traditionally taught: God wills something, because He is good, but that doesnt ignore divine sovereignty. William Craigs answer is, Gods moral nature is itself the ultimate standard of moral goodness. Go ds moral nature is what Plato called the Good. He is the source of moral value.  [6]   The Teleological Argument McCloskey claims, as does many philosophers, that in order to believe that nature was designed, there would need to be examples that were indisputable. The Argument of Design, appeals to a principle of reasoning that seems to be firmly embedded in common sense and in scientific thinking, so he asks, How can evil exist if an omnipotent God really exists? That brings us to the concept of free moral will. Evil is not something God deliberately and maliciously created so that humans could experience pain and suffering. Atheists never deal with the question of what the purpose of mans existence is. Julian Huxley, representing the atheist view, said: We are as much a product of blind forces as is the falling of a stone to Earth, or the ebb and flow of the tides. We have just happened, and man was made flesh by a long series of singularly beneficial accidents.  [7]  McCloskey asks why God cant keep humans from making wrong decisions? The teleological argument says, To approach this proof, indisputable examples of design would be required. Generally speaking, to give an example of design, would make it possible that there is a Designer; and in order for that possibility to exist, God must exist! McCloskey says, No being who was perfect could have created a world in which there was so much suffering or in which his creatures would engage in morally evil acts, which often result in injury to innocent persons.  [8]  Moral evil is caused by the actions and wrong choices of free, morally responsible beings. Natural evil, is the evil that does not occur as a result of a responsi bly moral being. God is justified in allowing evil, because he is God and we are not! Alvin Plantinga in his book: God, Freedom, and Evil writes, God has reasons for allowing evil that we cant know and would not understand if we did. Some of the evils in the world happen in order to produce second order virtues. For example, a first order evil occurs, when a grizzly bear charges a mans daughter; perhaps a second order virtue, courage, is produced when the man charges the bear waving his arms to scare the bear off. Or, if the bear gets the girl, which would be evil, perseverance and reliance on Christ could be the second order virtue of the man. The second order evils that occur, are opposite virtues, such as cowardice? This is the result of the mistakes of Man and his poor use of free choice.  [9]  McCloskeys discussion of free will begins when he asks why God did not arrange so that man always makes the right choice. His argument, is not logical, because had God decreed that ev eryone always choose the right path, then no one would have a free will. As Evans stated in his book, Philosophy of Religion: Thinking About Faith, AGod allows human kind a free will, because without it we could not be morally responsible, nor would we be capable of freely doing good by responding to and loving our Creator. Atheists cannot always argue that free will and necessitation to virtue are incompatible, because they represent God himself as possessing a free will and as being incapable of acting immorally. If this can be the case with God, why can it not be so with all free agents?  [10]   The Presence of Evil. There is the idea postulated worldwide that states, the amount of good in the world ultimately outweighs the evil in the world. Its the Agreater [emailprotected] argument where a greater good is achieved and therefore the good will always outweigh the bad. So by McCloskeys definition, wholesale murder is wrong, but unavoidable. If the atheist says there is no such thing as objective morality, the atheist loses all credibility. In JudeoChristian theism, we believe objective morality exists, and is the byproduct of the regenerate heart and mind, and if morality is transcendent of the opinions of man, it becomes nothing more than logic, when in fact morality is far more important than logic. So does atheism have a better explanation for the existence of objective morality? McCloskey offers nothing to the debate! Atheism is not comforting Our universe is a maze of mysteries, like how can gravity pull the Milky Way into a spiral? How can atoms contain such power that matter, smaller than a dime, produced the energy in the bomb that killed 100,000 Hiroshima residents? How can the doublehelix thread of DNA create all living things, from bacteria to trees to Beethoven? How can electrons, dormant in every atom of your body, explode into violent lightning bolts when theyre detached? Why does anything exist? If we say that the power of gravity, atoms, DNA, lightning and all the rest is God B and that God is E = MC2 B then God exists. Those baffling forces are undeniably real. McCloskey offers some encouragement and insight saying, Atheism is not comforting when you consider the problem of evil. 3.1 SUMMARISE KEY FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN PLANNING ASSESSMENT When planning assessment you need to gauge a clear idea of what level the candidate is at to see if they are ready to complete your planned assessment. There are many ways of achieving this knowledge. One method is observation in performance or another by taking an initial assessment test which have seven levels with the basic entry level 1 being the first. Once this knowledge has been gained, further knowledge is needed to suit their needs. What is their preferred learning style, is it part of a group or on a one to one basis. You will need to find out their strengths and weaknesses to get the most out of their abilities but also to work around and improve on different area that need to be worked on. When this has all been achieved the learners will need to be given information about the planned assessment. First of all they will need to have an understanding of what they are about to study, explaining what they need to do to meet the criteria set by OFQUAL – the governing body of the qualifications. It is important that the health and safety procedures are explained to ensure their safety throughout their assessment. They need to try and sleep away from any vehicle traffic. Personnel need to ensure they are protected against pests and any environmental hazards that might be specific to the area. When an individual is nearing lights out they must wind down about thirty to sixty minutes prior. This process could be taking a nice warm shower or a relaxing bubble bath. You must remove yourself from all electronics and just go unplugged prior to turning the lights out. This allows your mind to start preparing itself so you can easily fall asleep within fifteen minutes of turning the lights out. Try to stick to a consistent bed time and wake up time during the week and weekends. When you stay up late on Friday and Saturday night and sleep in on Saturday and Sunday it puts your body in a similar state to jet lag. This makes it even harder to get up on Monday. There are various short term and long term consequences of sleep deficiency. In the short term your mental and physical performance will decrease along with your reaction time.
